Project: Gearbox borescope & bolt inspections
Turbines: Vestas V117
Location: Dunbar, Edinburgh
Duration: September – November 2025
Scope of Works
Between September and November 2025, we were tasked to carry out a series of gearbox borescope inspections and bolt checks which were required on Vestas V117 turbines in Scotland. These inspections are essential for identifying early-stage wear, discoloration, standstill marks, or structural issues within critical drivetrain components. Without routine internal assessments, developing defects within planetary gears, bearings, and ring gears may go unnoticed, potentially leading to unplanned downtime, higher repair costs, and long-term asset underperformance.
Our Gearbox Inspection Process using Borescope Equipment
We delivered a full internal gearbox assessment using advanced borescope equipment to access hard-to-reach areas within the Winergy gearbox. The inspection covered all key components, including 1st and 2nd stage planetary gears, sun gears, ring gears, generator bearings, and associated housings.
We also conducted a visual evaluation of surrounding components and noted minor findings such as light discoloration and a small standstill mark, however there was no evidence of damage or corrosion. As a result, we advised on preventative steps, including future breather filter replacement to minimise humidity-related risks once the gearbox is installed.
Expertise from AIS Wind Energy Personnel
Our experienced specialists are trained in gearbox diagnostics, borescope operation, and turbine component condition assessment in order to carry out these vital inspections. With technical accuracy, and adherence to RAMS procedures, we were able to ensure a reliable and comprehensive evaluation. Our team’s capability to identify early indicators of wear, even when overall component condition is good, provides operators with critical maintenance insight, supporting turbine reliability and long-term performance.
