How can AIS Wind Energy Support Welsh Wind Farms?

With its rugged landscapes and coasts, Wales is quickly becoming a leading location for the creation of renewable energy, particularly onshore wind energy. As the nation continues to demonstrate its commitment to making a substantial impact on the UK’s energy landscape, AIS Wind Energy works closely with Welsh wind energy providers to ensure they operate at their best.

We support providers in the UK, Europe and beyond to keep turbines in peak performance – from installation to decommissioning, and all the necessary maintenance in between.

Our Welsh customers benefit from a totally bespoke service that is designed to meet each farm’s individual requirements and we tap into our wide network of industry experts to deliver an unrivalled level of specialist support.

Wind Turbine Installation

Wind turbine installation is seamless with our full-service provision which includes loading, transportation and complex specialist lifting, as well as replacement of components, mechanics and electrics.

AIS Group has decades of experience in heavy lifting and provides end-to-end support to Welsh wind farms by taking turbines directly from manufacturers to site ready for commissioning. We even take care of all the administration – managing permit arrangements and other important paperwork.

Installation services include:-

Planning and creation of a method statement for turbine installation
– Safety planning
– Risk assessment and on-site supervision
– Loading turbines to transport and driving to the wind farm
– Lifting the turbine and all components into position
– Fixing wind turbine components in place on site
– Mechanical and electrical fit out.

Wind Turbine Maintenance

Wind turbines need to operate efficiently and safely, and interruptions can affect performance. With our wind turbine maintenance service in Wales, we can help you optimise the performance of your turbines.

We will help you plan and implement maintenance of all your turbines, programming maintenance in advance and ensuring components are in good condition. Our aim is to identify faults before they cause problems.

We also provide advice on component replacement, including blades, generators, gearboxes and more, reducing chances of failure.

Scheduled maintenance includes:-

  • Planning and scheduling of all maintenance
  • Maintenance of key wind turbine components including:
  • Tower sections
  • Coupling between gearbox and generator
  • Blades
  • Gearbox
  • Generator
  • Blade Bearings
  • Main Ring Bearings

We do not carry out reactive maintenance on faulty wind turbines or provide fault location services.

Wind Turbine Decommissioning

As new innovations enter the marketplace and wind farms invest in more advanced technology, older turbines can become surplus to requirements and are therefore decommissioned.

AIS Wind Energy works closely with a number of wind energy providers in Wales to provide this vital service. Our support includes helping to determine which turbines need to be decommissioned, identifying when best to carry out the project in order to minimise disruption and removing turbines from site.

There are a number of factors to consider, such as operational requirements, availability of new technology and even weather conditions – all of which form part of a detailed decommissioning plan.

Once agreed, our specialists begin by disconnecting electrics and stripping turbine components before expertly lifting them from the tower and transporting them off site.

Decommissioning services include:-

  • Creation of a full method statement
  • Risk assessment and safety planning
  • Safe isolation and disconnection of turbines
  • Component removal
  • Lifting of the wind turbine from the tower
  • Loading and transportation to the turbine’s new owner, yard or scrap supplier.

Wind Turbine Component Replacement

In a similar vein to whole turbines being upgraded, individual components require replacement over time to keep turbines running effectively and efficiently. Our specialist teams work with wind farms across Wales to ensure this happens by retrofitting and exchanging components as and when required.

At AIS Wind Energy, we expertly and safely remove unwanted components before lifting and connecting new ones.

Component replacement services include:-

  • Planning, method statement and risk assessment
  • Isolation of the electricity to ensure safe component replacement
  • Disconnection and removal of old parts
  • Lifting and positioning on the new component
  • Commissioning support via a variety of experts within our network.

What Wind Farms are based in Wales?

Pen y Cymoedd

Developed by Vattenfall, Wales’ largest wind farm comprises 76 turbines and has been in operation since 2017. Pen y Cymoedd generates enough power each year to meet the electricity demand of more than 188,000 UK households. Over the lifetime of the project, it is expected to save 6.4 million tonnes of CO2.

Clocaenog Forest

This farm was opened in July 2022 by Julie James MS, Welsh Government Minister for Climate Change. Located near Denbeigh, it is a large-scale renewable energy generation project which consists of 27 turbines.

Alwen Forest

RWE Renewables UK Ltd is behind this wind farm and working alongside Community Energy Wales to develop a renewable energy project adjacent to Llyn Brenig and the Alwen Reservoir within working forestry managed by Natural Resources Wales. The 9 turbine project aims to deliver up to 33MW of clean energy.
